What Are Prescription Sunglasses?
Are you tired of dealing with annoying contact lenses? If you are a regular contact lens wearer, you might not know that your normal non-prescription sunglasses may not be providing your eyes the best possible protection against the sun’s rays.
Are you put off by fiddly clip-on sunglasses lenses - and if you usually wear clip-ons, have you ever misplaced or broken your lenses, only to be left blinded by the sun without them?
If either of those issues has got you pondering, it might just be time to try out some brand spanking new prescription sunglasses - also known as RX sunglasses.
Advantages of Prescription Sunglasses
Prescription sunglasses are a great option for anyone who is interested in receiving excellent optics, as well as all-day UV protection. Not only are they practical and affordable, but they are also extremely convenient to have on hand.
Just take a minute to picture these scenarios...
- Enjoying a day on the beach without irritating your contacts with the dreaded ‘three S’s’ - sun-screen, sand, or seawater.
- Enjoying a relaxing drive by taking off your usual specs and slipping on a pair of sleek sunglasses that give you the same great vision correction as your prescription lenses without having to worry about getting the sun in your eyes.
- Being able to play your favorite outdoor sports - or even just going for a run - without worrying about your clip-on lenses falling off or breaking.
Choosing Prescription Sunglasses
Already have a favorite pair of sunglasses in mind? Well, you’re in luck. No matter the brand or model, virtually any pair of sunglasses can be fitted with prescription lenses. In addition, prescription sunglasses can be matched with any lens prescription, including bifocal and progressive lenses for conditions like presbyopia.
They are also very useful for outdoor reading if you generally just wear reading glasses.
Prescription sunglasses can be made with a wide variety of lens materials, including high-index lenses, polycarbonate lenses, CR-39 plastic lenses, Trivex lenses and even glass lenses (although it must be noted that while glass lenses provide the best optics, they tend to be heavier and are more fragile than plastic lenses. If you’re looking for a pair of outdoor shades, we’d recommend sticking with some lighter plastics).
When selecting prescription lenses for your outdoor eyewear, you may also want to consider adding a photochromic tint or color-matching your lenses.
A photochromic tint will give your lenses a transition effect - which means they will automatically adjust to changes in ambient light conditions (i.e. they darken in the sun and become clearer indoors).
The transition effect of photochromic lenses is only activated when in direct contact with the sun’s UV rays, which means they do not darken inside cars - modern windshields and windows block a significant portion of UV light.
To color-match your lenses, we will try to match your prescription sunglasses lenses to the original lens color. If your lenses are light in color, don’t worry; UV protection is completely unrelated to the tint or density of the color in sunglasses lenses. As long as your optician confirms that your lenses have 100% UV protection, you can choose any lens color you like!

zFORT® Blue Light Blocking Glasses
Blue light is a potentially harmful form of light. While it is naturally emitted by the sun, electronic devices (upon which we’re spending more and more time every day) are also high-level producers. Blue light rays at a wavelength between 415nm - 455nm can damage your retinal cells, which may lead to premature eye ageing and vision problems in the future.
Our exposure to these harmful light rays may also cause a range of other health problems, including poor sleep (according to a 2012 Harvard Medical School study). Find out more about how to protect your eyes from blue light with anti blue light glasses from zFORT®.
