Do I Need Glasses?

Glasses - What Do I Need to Know?

Changes to your vision are slow and subtle. Instead of waking up with incurably blurry vision, you’ll likely experience a very gradual decline in your visual acuity that you might not even notice at first. Alternatively, you might start experiencing eye strain, having to squint, headaches or other discomfort that was not there before. The solution might just be glasses.

Typical signs that you may need glasses include headaches, eye pain and squinting. Flashes, floaters, sudden loss of vision or eye pain are things that should be looked at immediately.

The most common vision problems and eye conditions that will make you feel like you need glasses (or a change to your current eyeglass prescription) include:

  • Short-sightedness (myopia) - which makes it difficult to see distant objects clearly.

  • Long-sightedness (hyperopia) - where focusing on up-close objects is difficult, but long-distance vision is normal.

  • Presbyopia - the natural loss of near focusing ability that happens to nearly everyone sometime after they turn 40. However, this is happening to younger people more and more thanks to the amount of near-vision work on computers.

  • Cataracts - a clouding of the eye's natural lens, or the most common cause of vision loss in people over age 40. Cataracts are treated with surgery and the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL).

Symptoms of computer vision syndrome from excessive use of electronic devices with visual displays also can be a clue that you need glasses. Blue light glasses, like those with zFORT®, are an amazing way to protect your eyes from screen glare.
