Are carrots good for your eyes?

Answer:

Carrots are commonly claimed to improve your eye health and night vision in particular.

Although there is truth to this statement, it does originally come from a myth. During World War II, pilots were fed carrots to improve their vision at night and their target precision. This practice has stayed in people's minds since then.

Even though carrots aren’t as magical as they are being marketed, there are many supplements in carrots that are good for your health and especially your eye health.

For example, carrots contain beta carotene and lutein, which are antioxidants that can help prevent eye damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are compounds that can lead to negative eye effects, especially with age.

Beta carotene is the supplement that gives a carrot its orange color. Our body converts this supplement into Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps your eyes see at night and without it, it can lead to blindness.

• Yellow carrots contain lutein, which helps prevent age-related macular degeneration, another eye condition which leaves your vision partially blurred or blind.
