How to Measure Pupillary Distance

What Is Pupillary Distance?

Pupillary Distance (PD) is the distance between your pupils - as simple as that. Ascertaining pupillary distance is typically done by your eye doctor or specialist, as the measurement is crucial in fitting your glasses to your eyes. You may be familiar with the concept; your optician should provide your pupillary distance after an eye exam.

It's worth noting that the distance between the optical centres of your lenses should be the same as your pupillary distance in order for proper vision correction to take place.

However, in case it isn’t given to you, our following guide will show you how to find the pupillary distance. When measuring pupillary distance, you can either do it online, by yourself with a mirror, ask a friend for assistance, or use our Lens Scanner App that gives you an accurate reading of your current prescription and pupillary distance.

Measure your Pupillary Distance Online

The best option of measuring your PD is by using our free online tool. We recommend this way as it’s fast, easy, and accurate. All you need for our online tool is a smartphone or a webcam and a card with a magnetic strip. The tool comes with voice instructions that will guide you through 4 easy and quick steps.

How to Find Your Pupillary Distance With Assistance

Please note that for this test, you'll need a ruler, another human and a pair of eyes.

Step 1 – Hold the pupillary distance ruler up to the bridge of your nose. Your pupillary distance ruler can be any millimetre ruler.

Step 2 – Have a friend stand roughly an arm’s length away from you.

Step 3 – Close your right eye and ensure the pupillary distance ruler’s zero is aligned with your left pupil. Make sure your accomplice is paying attention, as you'll need them for this part.

Step 4 – Keep the pupillary distance ruler still. Look straight ahead, close your left eye and open your right eye.

Step 5 – Have your friend read the number that's aligned with the centre of your right pupil. This number is your pupillary distance.

Step 6 – Use the scientific method: Repeat the process to ensure the most accurate result.

Here are a few tips that you can use when someone is helping you measure your pupillary distance:

- Have them crouch/sit while you stand so they are out of your field of vision.

- Keep your eyes as still as possible.

- Look above their head at something approximately 3-4 metres away.

How to Find Your Pupillary Distance by Yourself

Please note that for this test, you'll just need a ruler and a mirror. Nice and easy.

Step 1 – Hold the pupillary distance ruler up to the bridge of your nose. Your pupillary distance ruler can be any millimetre ruler.

Step 2 – Face a mirror.

Step 3 – Close your right eye. Whilst looking in the mirror, Ensure the pupillary distance ruler’s zero is aligned with your left pupil.

Step 4 – Keep the pupillary distance ruler still. Look straight ahead, close your left eye and open your right eye.

Step 5 – Read the number that aligned with the centre of your right pupil. This number is your pupillary distance.

Step 6 – Repeat the process to ensure you get the most accurate result.

What Is the Average Pupillary Distance?

The average pupillary distance for most adults lies between 55 and 65mm, while the average pupillary distance for children is usually between 42 and 54mm. However, for some people, pupillary distance can vary outside these typical measurements.

zFORT® Blue Light Blocking Glasses

Blue light is a potentially harmful form of light. While it is naturally emitted by the sun, electronic devices (upon which we’re spending more and more time every day) are also high-level producers. Blue light rays at a wavelength between 415nm - 455nm can damage your retinal cells, which may lead to premature eye ageing and vision problems in the future.

Our exposure to these harmful light rays may also cause a range of other health problems, including poor sleep (according to a 2012 Harvard Medical School study). Find out more about how to protect your eyes from blue light with anti-blue light glasses from zFORT® and explore our huge rage of glasses online.
