What are NHS Optical

The NHS Optical Voucher Scheme is run by the National Health Service, which allows those UK residents who meet the criteria to benefit from 'optical vouchers' which can be used towards eyeglasses and contact lens purchases. These come in the form of 10 optical vouchers and complex lens vouchers, ranging in value depending on the strength of the prescription needed. The stronger your prescription, the higher the value of the optical voucher.

Who qualifies for NHS Optical

You're entitled to an optical voucher if you:

  • are under 16 years of age
  • between the ages 16-18 and in full-time education
  • receive income support
  • receive Jobseeker's allowance
  • receive Pension Credit Guarantee credit
  • are on low income and on a valid NHS HC2 certificate for full time health costs.

For more information please visit the NHS Optical Vouchers page.

Can I use my optical voucher at

We unfortunately do not accept NHS optical vouchers on our site, however you may find that we are still better value with a far wider selection on glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses compared to high-street opticians. At SmartBuyGlasses you can purchase your complete frames and prescription lenses starting at just £6!
