In the first exhibit since his death last June, Yves Saint Laurent’s work went on display at the San Francisco DeYoung Museum in early November. The exhibit spanned 40 years of the designer’s collection, showing the progression of styles and labels, from Christian Dior to his own label, the icon of culture has definitely left his color splash on the world by infusing the design community with pure haute couture.

Saint Laurent is perhaps best known for his female tuxedo designs, a raw diffusion of the male persona, giving women the power and ability to not only bridge the power gap (in fashion) but to demean it by making it sexy and fresh.

Saint Laurent was a global voyeur, and took from many cultures when expanding his design portfolio. From his 1967 African-inspired women’s wear to his Russian inspired exotic dresses and Spanish frills and colours on cubic designs.

Saint Laurent’s eyewear collection, inspired by a reversal of the norm, has been a feature and highlight of his runway collections since his first YSL launch. His sunglasses designs are as versatile as his clothing collection, and he provides a unique style for every outfit. From full-face round frames to sleek, wind-swept male designs, YSL has the ability to design for every face shape, gender, style and in such an array of colors and textures as to make this a collection of true magnitude. Havign designed eyewear for over 50 years, his designs are at once vintage, modern, and all the while Yives Saint Laurent.
