This year’s Academy Awards ceremony revealed more than just the winners in each catacgory of honor. Yes, this year revealed much about the fashion industry. Steve Martin wore Persol, Robert Downey Jr. wore Oliver Peoples, Sidney Hicks wore Marc Jacobs—and that is just the eyewear on display at this illustrious event! Everyone looked fantastic and classically elegant rather than annoyingly underdressed or wearing something ridiculous for the sake of getting your name recognized. This year was all about a better era. The accidental theme of the awards, at least in the fashion sense, was elegance and 1950’s charm. The men were all in tuxedos, with very little variation except for a few accessory changes like Downey Jr.’s Oliver Peoples. The ladies were the very embodiement of grace in long, ruffled gowns that could have been just as popular in the years after WWII.
If the Grammy Awards earlier this year told us anything about fashion, it was a glimpse into what will be popular with jouvaniles. Pleather, silver, shine, jeweles and tight leggings and boots are all for the young and undiscovered. Meanwhile, the academy awards proved that A-listers do not need to make fools out of themselves to get noticed. Demi Moore looked smashing in a frilly, layered gown with a rich fabric weave at the bodice. This design seemed to be the norm rather than the exception. The ‘it’ colors at the awards were bright red, simple blues and the occaspional purple or black. There were very few ostentatious yellows or oranges. It was a very tasteful event.

Roughly one third of all people need glasses in order to see properly. Regardless of the causes, the reality is that half of us deal with the question of whether to get contact lenses or eyeglasses, and after tackling that first question we must embrace a thousand more before we arrive at a final decision. Choosing is a personal undertaking, and we’ll just assume that if you are reading this you’ve decided to go with contacts.
Depending on your prescription, you’ll want to take into account your lifestyle before buying your first set of contacts. Do you want disposable or reusable contact lenses? There are many good brands our there, like ClearSight. If you’ve chosen reusable contacts then consider the maintenance involved. Each evening you’ll need to take them out, rinse them off and store them in solution. In the morning, you’ll rinse them off again before putting them in. In order to properly care for your reusable contacts, you’ll need solution, a storage case, and a good mirror with bright lighting to check for scratches or dirt on your lenses before installing them. With disposables you just take them out and toss.
Applying contact lenses is not as difficult as you may think. Though you may have had issues in the past, many people overcome these simply by practicing a few times and using good technique. First, put the clean and moist lens on the tip of your index finger, using your other hand, hold your eye open and simply touch your eyeball with your finger. The lens will automatically conform to the shape of your eye—it is attracted to the moisture of your eye and the eyelid will remoisten the opposing side.
Taking out your contact lenses are just as easy. Simply touch your lens on the eye gently then slowly pull away, the lens should stick to your finger. Blink a few times to make sure you re-moisten your eye, and then set about cleaning and storing your contact lenses.

Amy Williams is more than an Olympic Gold Medalist (and, so far, the only one Great Britain has for 2010). Heralded as a true role-model, ‘Curly Wurly’ Williams is also a fashion-forward (as in Prada and Dior) PhD student. At age 27, she has achieved a great deal with this gold medal victory, her upcoming dissertation and has earned respect and awe from fellow athletes and spectators alike. As the gold medalist in women’s skeleton bobsledding, she has sparked the fire of many male hearts while putting her younger female peers in awe at her multitasking ability. Although fashionable, smart, athletic and talented all at once, Williams is finding her win a bit dogged.
But this year the win was marred by an ongoing controversy over Williams’ helmet, which the American coach says is clearly illegal. Rules stipulate that helmets cannot have ridges, yet Williams’ has several along the sides, clearly designed to increase aerodynamics. Since the American racer has spent 10 years in training and was slated to win (and came in second by a mere 0.10 seconds) it is understandable that the American’s emotional state may be a bit skewed. However, the Canadians followed suit in protesting the helmet. The Olympic board has ruled that Williams’ helmet obeys regulations, despite the ridges, and allowed her to race in the improved but apparently legal headgear.
Nevertheless, we love Williams for her fashion sense and her ability to rock on and off the ice, in school or in work, and is definitely a well rounded person and a great British role model.
