uk0814.JPGDakota Fanning, the inspired young actress best known for her role in ‘I am Sam’ has donned a pair of very unsurprising Ray Ban Wayfarers. The style is youthful, bright and yet fashionable, all the things a child star content on using her youth to her advantage when landing amazing roles that are well above her age bracket. She has proved her competence more than once as a child star, but this overachieving kid is quickly turning into an adult who will have to face the reality that looks, more than talent and skill, are what land the big bucks in Hollywood.

Ray Bans seem to be in season for the youthful tweens, as Hayden Panettiere, of Heroes, has been spotted in all of Ray Ban’s biggest styles, including the Wayfarer, Aviator and Clubmaster. While the style is a bit heavy for Hayden’s features, the look is a decidedly middle-road one, where Hayden will not raise too many eyebrows for being overly womanly too soon, and yet avoid looking too childish, as Dakota Fanning sometimes does.

Hillary Duff, who bean on the Nickelodeon channel, has found herself at an age between adulthood and childhood. While other child stars have taken the less controversial approach of extending their youth and thus elongating their careers, Hillary Duff has thrown caution to the wind by wearing ever more revealing clothing and designer eyewear from Dior. She even wears the ever risqué Dita sunglasses as well as Chanel.
Teenaged stars who get their start early on tend to fizzle out unless they play their cards right. It seems as though Hayden may be a one-hit-wonder while Hillary may fizzle out as too ‘cliché Hollywood’ to be of any usefulness in cinema or music. Dakota, however, shows promise as a serious actress who is not yet type-cast nor overly ‘typical’ of the female elite.

Clever and creative marketing makes all the difference in the fashion industry, especially the eyewear industry where some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are recruited as models for the fashionable frames. From Versace to Persol and Fendi, only one can claim the title of the designer eyewear best logo. uk0807_n.JPG Several of the designer logos are overly simple and a bit bland. Prada, for example, is simply a white background with the word Prada written on it. Perhaps they think the weight of their designs does not warrant over creativity. I disagree. Versace, on the other hand, has created a logo that is so intricate and complex that it is not easily recreated and is too intricate to weave into normal eyewear designs as a trademark. Gucci, with the simple name and the circular logo that is so recognizable, has managed to find the best possible way to combine simplicity with a bit of creativity to end up with a logo that is truly unique and versatile.

Police sunglasses, though unique and present a wide range of styles and designs, has a logo that looks like copyright infringement on Emporio Armani’s black striped eagle. Both designs are great, but the fact that the eyewear industry is relatively small means that one of them should consider hiring a new marketing manager.

In the realm of sports eyewear, no one has a logo quite as recognizable as Nike, though adidas is a close second. Oakley’s ripple-water O is easily recognizable and presents a sharp and modern look.

All things considered, we think Gucci takes the cake on best logo design for fashionable eyewear.

uk0804.jpgCorey Feldmen, seen here in a women’s Bvlgari design at the Michael Jackson memorial service, exemplifies the very best of dual-gendered eyewear. These shades, which are part of the female collection, make 80s star Corey Feldmen appear sharp and modern, a real 21ct century look for the has-been icon. Many Bvlgari designs can bridge the gender gap thanks to their modern, clean-lined approach to style. Meanwhile, the jeweled designs on the temple bars are not overly flamboyant, and thus appropriate for any secure male.

Ray Ban Wayfarers are another dual-gender design that are popular across a broad spectrum of personalities and characteristics. From Mary Kate Olsen to the Blue’s Brothers, Wayfarers have remained a fan favorite since their inception. With a classic look, durable frames and sure-thing fashion, Wayfarers are sure to stick around for years to come both in the female and male fashion realms. Ray Ban Aviators are also a popular favorite for men and women alike; both Angelina Jolie and her hubby Brad Pitt have Aviators on hand for sunny days.

Some brands, like Police Eyewear, manage to create a design with both a male and female model so that women can enjoy the same fashion as men, but fit to their smaller facial features and scaled to size. This makes Police a real competitor in the eyewear industry where some labels, like Dior, have women’s specific designs that are definitively feminine.

So, if you are a woman who loves the clean lines and simplicity of men’s eyewear designs then start your search with Ray Ban, Police and Bvlgari, where gender is less a defining character than pure, unadulterated fashion.
